About the Student Representative for MABA

My name is Jessica Summers and I am so excited to be your 2016 MABA Student Representative! I have completed my Honours Degree in Psychology and am currently a first year Master’s Student at the University of Manitoba. My research has focused on children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their parents. I am currently working with a fourth year Honours Student looking at the effectiveness of home based incidental teaching sessions to improve compliance. I recently completed a pilot study on the evaluation of a parenting program entitled Group Stepping Stones Positive Parenting Program offered at St. Amant which is for children with autism as well as their parents. I had the opportunity to present this research at the 2015 Canadian Conference on Developmental Disabilities and Autism. My current research will be focusing on Mindfulness. I am interested in the positive effects mindfulness can have on staff as well as clients at St. Amant. We will be looking at the impact of mindfulness on worker self-efficacy, focus, and reduction of staff stress and burnout in addition to increased client happiness and a reduction in challenging behaviors. On completion of my Master’s degree and my BCBA, I plan to complete my PhD and work as a behavior analyst at an agency that provides services to children with autism and developmental disabilities. I also plan to apply for a teaching position at a university in addition to continuing my research.

The Student Rep’s Goals for 2016

I hope to encourage students to become more active in ABA as well as to join MABA. Students are welcome to join MABA committees and take part in our meetings.

Providing students with opportunities to add presentations to their CV is also important. I plan to continue with the annual poster competition and give students a chance to take part. If you are interested in participating or joining a MABA committee, email me at
